The Russians continued to press, with Oudinot's troops under intense pressure. The French commanders decided that enough was enough, and launched Nansouty's Cuirassiers straight at Markov. The textbook cavalry assault crushed the leading Russian regiments, and forced the rest into square. However, the tables were now turned, as Sacken- behind Markov in close support- deployed a 24 gun battery and proceeded to pound the French cavalry. It was agony for the French commanders as the recall order worked its way through the command layers, but finally the heavies trooped off the way they had come, leaving several hundred dead around the Russian squares.
Bagration pushed still more troops into the attack, as Betchuchev's Jager were sent forward on Markov's flank. However, not having heeded the lesson handed to Oudinot, the Jager were themselves caught by an opportunity charge by the Saxon cuirassiers, and sent tumbling backwards.
The action now switched to the other flank, as the Russian cavalry was sent forward against Grouchy. As often with LFS, the result was mostly "handbags", until Uvarov was sent forward across the stream to attack the weakened French cuirassiers. The St Petersburg Dragoons plunged across the stream and forced the French back, only to be hit by the  2nd Dutch Hussars and routed. The initiative now switched to the French, as Defrance's Carabiniers were unleashed, and proceeded to make quick work of their lighter mounted opponents. The Russian cavalry was losing the battle. At this point, Bennigsen woke up (he had not needed to do anything for most of the game. Now he needed to change some orders, he was prevented by doing so by the Poor/Cautious card, 3 moves in a row! As the umpire, I just had to laugh!!). Kalobrigov's Guard cavalry were diverted north of the mill stream, and Sedmoratzki began to make his presence felt (or rather, his artillery did!).
Back to Posthenen for the final drama. Mortier's corps had arrived, and were posted in and behind Posthenen, allowing Outdinot to concentrate his remaining elites to the south of the village, where they beat off a final assault from the remnants of Markov and Betchuchev's troops. The grenadiers breasted the crest of the hill as they looked to complete their victory, only to meet the Military Order Kuirassiers charging straight at them. A very unequal struggle ensued, and the infantry poured back down the hill. Only some good dice rolls and fortunate positioning of reserve units saved the French from further disaster. More bad luck for the Russians: it is now customary in our refights, that if someone wins a combat with a +17 on the combat table, we award them a captured Eagle. We duly did so to the Military Order, until we realised that the combined grenadiers wouldn't have carried one!
